Haynes launch the Mercedes-Benz A-Class
Owners Workshop Manual
Introduced in 1997, the original A-Class was a ground breaking package, boasting
new technology, newly developed transmissions and a wide range of petrol and
diesel engines. It was the first front wheel drive ‘baby’ model from Mercedes-Benz
and proved an instant success, selling over one million units worldwide in its first 7
years of production (over 88,000 in the UK alone).
Initially it gained some notoriety when it rolled over during the Swedish “Moose test”
(a manoeuvre where the driver swerves violently as if avoiding a moose) but
Mercedes-Benz turned the situation to their advantage by halting sales, recalling all
the cars sold and installing an electronic stability control system which fixed the
problem.
